A jungle trek is more than the time we spend walking through the rainforest. Local guides plan the route, share their knowledge of the forest and look after guests along the way. On overnight treks, the team also prepares meals and the camp. Others carry the large inner tubes from the village upstream to the jungle camp, ready for the rafting journey back. Much of this work happens before guests ever reach the riverside.
In Bukit Lawang, trekking prices follow guidelines developed through HPI (Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), the Indonesian Tourist Guides Association, and the local community. The aim is to keep prices clear for visitors and support fair pay for the guides, cooks, porters and rafting team involved in each trip.
For us, a good trek should be memorable for guests and worthwhile for the local people who make it possible. Understanding the price means understanding the work behind the experience—from guiding you through the forest to preparing your meals and carrying the tubes upriver.
