Bukit Lawang for Solo Travellers & Backpackers

Budget Travel, Shared Transport & Orangutan Group Trekking

Travelling to Bukit Lawang alone, with a friend or as a couple? This guide will help you plan your budget, find a suitable guest house, share transport and join an orangutan trekking group.

Travelling independently does not mean you have to trek alone. You can ask about joining other guests for a guided trek in Gunung Leuser National Park. Before booking, check available dates, the full price, what is included and the camping arrangements.

We also cover questions that matter to solo female travellers, including group arrangements, privacy and sleeping spaces at camp. These practical details can help you decide which option suits your budget and comfort.

I am Anto, a local jungle trekking guide based in Bukit Lawang. At Meet the Orangutans, we help guests plan their trek and discuss transport and guest house options before they arrive.

Getting to Bukit Lawang from Medan & Kualanamu Airport

Shared Transport, Private Cars & Public Transport

Your journey to Bukit Lawang starts with choosing transport that suits your arrival time, budget and number of travellers.

Tell us whether you are arriving at Kualanamu Airport or staying at an address in Medan, as pickup arrangements can differ.

SHARED TRANSPORT

Shared transport is an option for solo travellers, couples and friends who prefer to pay for individual seats.

Our quoted fare is Rp210,000 per person, one way.

Confirm availability, the pickup point and the final fare for your travel date.

The last shared departure is usually around 16:00.

If you are flying in, allow time for immigration, baggage collection and possible delays.

Send your flight details before booking so we can check whether the departure suits your arrival.

Ask whether you will wait for other passengers, how much luggage you can bring and where you will be dropped off in Bukit Lawang.

A shared transfer does not automatically include accommodation or a trekking booking.

PRIVATE CAR

Our quoted private transfer is Rp700,000 per car, one way.

This can suit travellers who want an agreed pickup time or are arriving too late for shared transport.

For two people, that works out at Rp350,000 each.

If you want to split a car with more travellers, confirm the vehicle’s seating and luggage capacity first.

Agree on the pickup location, departure time, everyone’s contribution and what happens if someone cancels.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM MEDAN

Public transport can be a little tricky if this is your first visit.

It is a budget option, but the vehicles can be crowded, with limited space for passengers and bags.

Sometimes passengers smoke inside, so do not expect the same comfort as a private transfer.

From Medan, head to the Pinang Baris area and look for the boarding point in front of Mawar Bakery.

Check that the vehicle has “Bukit Lawang” written on its front windscreen.

Confirm the destination with the driver before boarding.

Expect to pay around Rp50,000 per person.

Large bags or extra luggage may cost more.

Confirm the fare and any luggage charge directly with the driver before getting in, as visitors may sometimes be quoted an inflated price.

Pay directly to the driver, usually when you arrive at the Bukit Lawang bus terminal.

Avoid handing your fare to someone outside the vehicle who claims to collect it.

If you are unsure, check with the driver first to avoid paying twice.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM KUALANAMU AIRPORT

From Kualanamu Airport, first take an ALS (Antar Lintas Sumatra) bus towards Binjai.

After leaving the airport terminal building, look for the public transport area nearby and buy an ALS ticket.

The ALS fare is around Rp60,000 per person.

The journey to Binjai takes approximately two hours, depending on traffic and stops.

For ALS, buy a ticket from the ticket counter or authorised ticket staff.

This is different from the local bus to Bukit Lawang, where you pay directly to the driver.

Before departure, tell the ALS driver that you want to get off at Binjai Super Mall (BSM) to continue to Bukit Lawang.

You can say:

“Please drop me at Binjai Super Mall. I’m continuing to Bukit Lawang.”

At BSM, wait for a passing bus to Bukit Lawang.

The wait may be around 10–15 minutes, but it can be longer.

Look for “Bukit Lawang” on the front windscreen and confirm the destination before boarding.

If you do not arrange the BSM stop with the driver, you may be taken to the ALS terminal instead.

From there, you will need a becak to the boarding point for the Bukit Lawang bus.

Expect the becak to cost around Rp10,000, with approximately Rp10,000 extra for a large bag.

Agree on the full price before getting in.

The local bus from Binjai to Bukit Lawang costs around Rp50,000 per person.

Large bags or extra luggage may cost more, so confirm the full fare directly with the driver before boarding.

Again, pay the local Bukit Lawang bus fare directly to the driver, usually when you arrive at the Bukit Lawang terminal.

The ALS ticket is the exception: buy that through its ticket service.

TOTAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT COST FROM THE AIRPORT

If you change at BSM, the basic cost is around Rp110,000 per person:

ALS bus: Rp60,000.

Local bus to Bukit Lawang: Rp50,000.

If you need the becak connection, allow around Rp120,000, or Rp130,000 with the additional large-bag charge.

These examples exclude any extra luggage charge on the buses and the final transfer to your guest

ARRIVAL IN BUKIT LAWANG & GUEST HOUSE ACCESS

The local bus arrives at the Gotong Royong terminal, outside the main tourist area.

Contact your guest house before arriving to ask for directions or arrange a pickup.

Confirm whether the pickup costs extra.

For shared or private transport, ask where your vehicle will stop.

Some guest houses require a walk, steps or a bridge crossing from the drop-off point.

Let your host know if you have heavy luggage or expect to arrive after dark.

Allow around four to five hours for the journey from Medan, depending on traffic and transport arrangements.

Public transport can take longer because of waiting and connections.

The two-hour ALS journey from the airport to Binjai is only the first part of your trip.

If possible, arrive the day before your trek.

This gives you time to check in, rest and discuss the trekking arrangements.

All fares and departure times above are approximate.

Confirm the current arrangements before travelling, and leave extra time when planning your return journey for a flight.

The prices below are a general guide per room, per night. Facilities vary between properties, so ask for recent photos of the actual room and confirm what is included before booking.

BUDGET ROOMS — Rp150,000–Rp200,000

At this price, expect a small, simple room with basic facilities.

You may have a fan rather than air conditioning, and some rooms have a shared bathroom.

Breakfast is generally not included, and you should not expect a scenic view.

This can suit backpackers who mainly need somewhere to sleep before and after their trek.

STANDARD ROOMS — Rp300,000–Rp400,000

Standard rooms are usually a little larger than the cheapest options.

Some may have a pleasant view, depending on the property and the room you choose.

LARGER ROOMS — FROM Rp500,000

Rooms in this range are generally more spacious and may offer a better view.

In this range, you can find larger rooms with air conditioning and attractive views.

Some properties are beside the river and offer access to the riverbank.

If you hope to swim, ask your host about a suitable place and the current river conditions. Avoid assuming that river access means swimming is safe at all times.

Confirm the room’s view, bathroom facilities and whether breakfast is included.

ROOM FOR SOLO TRAVELLERS

If you are travelling alone, you will have your own room with a double bed.

the room price above are per room, per night. solo travellers pay the full room price.

BEFORE & AFTER YOUR TREK

Consider staying in Bukit Lawang the night before your trek so you have time to settle in and prepare.

You may also want a room after returning for a shower, laundry and rest.

Tell us your budget, number of guests and preferred facilities. We can discuss guest house options and check availability for your dates.

How to Join an Orangutan Trekking Group

For Solo Travellers, Couples & Friends

Travelling alone, as a couple or with a friend? You can join other guests for a guided orangutan trek in Bukit Lawang, depending on group availability.

At Meet the Orangutans, we can check available groups for your preferred dates and trek duration. Arranging this before you arrive can help you plan your transport and guest house stay.

HOW TO JOIN A GROUP

Tell us your preferred trekking date, how many people are travelling and how long you would like to spend in the jungle.

Include your expected arrival date in Bukit Lawang so we can discuss a suitable departure.

If your dates are flexible, let us know. Moving your trek by a day may help us find a group for you.

You do not need to wait until you arrive to ask about joining other travellers.

CHOOSING YOUR TREK DURATION

To join a group, your departure date and trek duration need to match those of the other guests.

A day trek can suit travellers who want to experience the jungle and return to their guest house without staying overnight.

An overnight trek includes sleeping at a jungle campsite. Longer treks allow more time to explore the forest.

Choose according to your budget, available time and comfort with walking and camping.

Tell us about your fitness level or any health concerns before booking so we can discuss whether the trek is suitable for you.

FOR SOLO TRAVELLERS, COUPLES & FRIENDS

Joining a group is also an option for two friends or a couple who would like to trek with other guests.

You can enjoy the guided trek together while keeping your guest house accommodation separate.

If you are travelling alone, joining a trekking group does not mean sharing your guest house room. You can still book your own room.

Shared transport is also a separate arrangement. Joining a trek does not automatically reserve a seat in a shared taxi.

PRICES & WHAT IS INCLUDED

Confirm the price per person for your chosen trek before booking.

Joining a group does not automatically reduce the advertised price per person, so check the full cost when planning your budget.

Our overnight trekking prices include your guide, national park permits, meals during the trek, camping equipment and the rafting return to Bukit Lawang.

Guest house accommodation and transport are separate unless they are specifically included in your booking.

For a day trek, confirm the inclusions for the option you choose.

CHECK THAT YOUR DEPARTURE IS CONFIRMED

Group availability depends on your dates, trek duration and other guest bookings.

Before making your plans final, check whether your group is already confirmed or is still being formed.

Confirm the meeting point, departure time and expected group size.

If there is no suitable group for your preferred date, we can discuss another date or a different trekking option and its price.

Before paying, make sure you understand the booking and cancellation terms, including what happens if a group cannot be formed.

PREPARING FOR YOUR TREK

Staying in Bukit Lawang the night before your trek gives you time to settle in and prepare, especially after a long journey.

Bring what you need for your chosen trek duration and ask about any equipment you are unsure of.

We have a locker available for belongings you do not need to carry into the jungle.

Leave enough time after your trek for a shower, rest and your onward journey. Discuss your transport plans with us before booking a tight connection.
